Finding Our Piece of Paradise: The Journey to Rainy Eve Homestead

In the whirlwind chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic, my husband and I found ourselves
swept up in a wave of curiosity and inspiration. As lockdowns shuttered the world
around us, we turned to homesteading YouTube channels, eager to explore new skills
and embrace a simpler way of life. Little did we know, this journey would lead us to
Rainy Eve Homestead, nestled in the serene landscapes of deep East Texas.
Living in the suburban confines of an Arizona HOA, gardening felt like an uphill battle
against the scorching sun and arid soil. Yet, amidst the challenges, I rediscovered a
passion for nurturing green life. Gardening became my sanctuary, a place of solace and
creativity in the midst of uncertainty.
As we continued to dream about living homesteading lifestyle, conversations of owning
our own piece of land began to surface. The pandemic laid bare the fragility of our food
systems, igniting a desire for self-sufficiency and resilience. We yearned for a legacy to
pass down to our children, a sanctuary where roots could grow deep. However, this
wasn’t an immediate objective; instead, it was something we envisioned unfolding in the
future.
Fueled by wanderlust and a love for real estate browsing (HGTV enthusiasts, unite!), I
casually reviewed listings across the southern United States. Let’s face it, we both like
to be warm! A property popped up that seemed perfect, sparking our interest. It wasn’t
the one we ended up buying, though. It was a property in the small town of Harleton,
north of Longview, where we felt led by God to move. It was a huge decision, especially
since my parents had recently moved closer to us and our son was staying in Arizona to
attend college. We deeply miss seeing all of them regularly.
We embarked on the daunting task of uprooting our lives and relocating across state
lines. Our journey resembled a makeshift caravan, with a convoy of vehicles laden with
belongings and cherished plants trailing behind us. Three days later, we arrived at our
new home, Rainy Eve Homestead. Despite the initial challenges—a kicked-in door,
wayward critters, and unexpected surprises—our hearts overflowed with gratitude for
the opportunity to embark on this adventure.
And so, with determination in our hearts and dirt beneath our fingernails, we set forth on
the journey to create our own happy little homestead. With each sunrise, we are
reminded of the endless possibilities that await as we cultivate our dreams and nurture
the land that now holds our roots.
